US CBP Partial Exam
A partial exam in the context of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) refers to a type of inspection conducted on imported goods. During a partial exam, CBP officers select a few cartons at random from a shipment and inspect the contents.
This type of exam is less extensive than an intensive exam, in which CBP officers may request that certain cargo be moved to a CBP-approved warehouse for a more thorough examination.Partial exams are one of several types of customs exams that CBP can conduct on imported shipments to ensure compliance with regulations and prevent the entry of prohibited or dangerous goods.
Other types of customs exams include X-ray exams, in which the container goes through an X-ray machine at the ocean port terminal, and tailgate exams, where CBP officers visually inspect the contents of a container without unloading it.

The fees for X-ray exams may range from $150 to $350 per container, depending on the port and the size of the container.
CBP Intensive ExamCBP

A CBP Intensive Exam is the most intrusive type of examination conducted by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) on imported cargo to ensure compliance with U.S. laws and regulations.During an Intensive Exam, the cargo is transferred to a Centralized Examination Station (CES) or a Customs-bonded facility. The container is fully unloaded, and CBP officers physically inspect the contents . This type of examination is more thorough than other types of customs exams, such as tailgate exams and X-ray exams
The Intensive Exam process can delay a shipment anywhere from a week to 30 days. After the cargo has been unloaded and thoroughly inspected, the CBP officers reload the shipping container .
Customs may decide to look very carefully through the entire batch of cargo, piece by piece if they feel it is necessary. The fees for an Intensive Exam tend to vary depending on the warehouse and the amount of work (labor) spent on it.
